Most people who become incarcerated can’t wait to get out of jail. But Ramon Aguilar is the exception to that rule. Inmate Aguilar has refused to leave the Yates county jail.

eviction notice
On Thursday afternoon Aguilar was walking home from a gas station drinking out of an open bottle of beer. An officer made contact, and a check with dispatch showed Aguilar on paper with a no drink stipulation. The officer arrested Aguilar and the probation agent placed a weekend hold on him.
Early on Monday jail staff told Aguilar he was free to go, but he said no. He stunned the jailers by saying he was not going to leave. Aguilar is on probation till May, and told jailers he intends to stay in jail till May.
We were granted an interview with Aguilar, who told us this. “Look on the outside I am sleeping on my sister’s floor. I don’t have a job, dropped out of school so not likely to get a job, and my sister keeps talking about kicking me out. Winter is coming, if she kicks me out I will be on the street and it is too cold for that. Even if she don’t kick me out, I know I will go out to get drunk or high and end up in here. So I told the deputies I was staying till my time on paper is up. Three hots and a cot, no reason not to stay. Plus in here I will be sober for six months, so maybe this time I will sober up and keep sober.”
Sheriff’s deputies had considered dragging him out and tossing him onto the street. But fear that security camera footage in the jail would be released as public record stopped them. None of the deputies were willing to be the next viral police brutality video on the Internet.
So the Sheriff decided to do something he never figured he would need to do. He went to the judge to get an eviction notice to kick Aguilar out of his jail. Due to a conflict of interest the Sheriff had to request mutual aid from Irwin County to serve the eviction notice. If Aguilar does not abide by the eviction notice then it will be Irwin County deputies who force him out of the Yates county jail.
