Two officer in Verpus, MN, we recently caught having sexual relations on-duty. According to the Verpus police chief due to wording in the current policy the officers are unlikely to face discipline.
Police caught in affair
Officers Jeff Klemp and Andrea Hake were caught when Hake’s roommate come home early. The roommate snapped a few photos as a joke and then uploaded one to Facebook. The photo showed an image of a gun and undergarments. It was captioned “Just got home from work. Now following trail of cloths, guns and handcuffs. Wonder what (or who) my roommate is doing”.
When a police supervisor realized that officer Hake would have been on duty at the time the photo was taken and uploaded he showed it to the chief. The chief pulled dispatch logs and found that just minutes before the photo was taken, office Hake called out on her lunch break. Officer Jeff Klemp called out on his lunch at the same time.
“I called them both into my office one at a time. They each admitted to doing what they had done. They are both single and claim to not be dating. The term ‘friends with benefits’ was how they described their little affair.”
Department policy allows officers to date and marry. The caveat being that officers in a relationship can not have a supervisor role over each other.
The spokesperson for the Verpus police union said this. “The union contract and policy state that every officer is entitled to a half hour break each shift. Nothing says that during this half hour food needs to be eaten. Both officers were back on patrol in less than half an hour, GPS data from the squad cars confirms this.”
The mayor of Verpus is outraged no discipline is taking place. “They were out of uniform. The policy clearly states officers have a uniform. I would think the police chief could write them up for being outside of the uniform policy.”
According to police union. “If these officers are disciplined for being out of uniform then any officer having a bathroom break is out of uniform. Any bike cop who gets too sweaty and changes into a new uniform is in danger of discipline.”
The police chief told us this. “They got away with it this time. But they will not get away with it again. I am writing a new policy that covers ‘conduct unbecoming an officer’. What my officers do off-duty is their business. But on duty, I am not going to allow any more hanky panky.”
